Survey Says—Most Drivers Use Handheld Devices!

Given the statistics about the relationship between distracted driving and motor vehicle accidents—more than 3,000 deaths annually and nearly half a million injuries—it’s no surprise that a recent survey by AT&T found that more than two-thirds of drivers admit to using a smartphone while behind the wheel. And it’s more than dialing up a song or sending a text message. Survey respondents confessed to surfing the web, checking the weather, looking at banking information and even taking “selfies.”

The Most Common Uses of a Smartphone While Driving

The survey found that the most prevalent use of a smartphone is still sending and receiving text messages, with 61% admitting they do that. About one-third of the respondents said they check e-mails while on the road and a little more than one in ten (12%) took videos while driving. Almost as many—10%–said they engaged in video chats while operating a motor vehicle.

Another prevalent use of smartphones behind the wheel is access a social networking site. Nearly one in five (17%) said they use Facebook while driving. Almost as many (14%) used either Twitter or Instagram, and 11% used Snapchat.

While the problem seems to affect people of all ages—nearly half of the respondents said they regularly text and drive—younger participants do so at higher rates. Approximately three in four teenagers said they text and drive.
